Kobe Bryant Passes Shaq in All-Time Scoring List

Kobe Bryant moved into fifth on the NBA all-time scoring list Monday in a Los Angeles Lakers defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers 95-90.

Bryant scored 28 points in the loss; he hit a long jumper with 5:07 remaining in the second quarter to pass former teammate Shaquille O’Neal on the all-time list.

“To say it’s a huge honor would be an understatement,” Bryant said after the game. “It’s a lot of basketball. I’ve been very, very fortunate to have such a good career.”

The Lakers dropped to 14-11 with the defeat which is what Bryant cares most about, “I just want No. 6, man,” Bryant said, referring to his championship count, when asked where he wanted to finish on the all-time scoring list when he retires. “I’m not asking for too much, man. Just give me a sixth ring.”

I don’t believe that this Lakers team can win Bryant his sixth ring given their backcourt issues. Other than Bryant, no other guard is averaging 10 or more points. Derek Fisher, Metta World Peace and Matt Barnes are either old or well-past their prime. Steve Blake has been decent when healthy but he is nothing more than a bench player.

Maybe Bryant can use some of his magic to help lure J.R. Smith after he finishes his deal with his club in China. Smith would bring youth and athleticism to a backcourt that is in desperate need for a change.

14-11 says that a move needs to be made. Hopefully, for Bryant, sooner rather than later.

Bryant currently has 28,601 points. Next on the all-time list: Wilt Chamberlain.
